A HISTORY OF ST-MAXIMIN LIMESTONE

CARRIERES DEGAN S.A was created in 1973 and quarries Saint Maximin blocks and limestone aggregates in the village of Saint-Maximin, in the Oise department, 60 km north of Paris.
The company is part of the long local tradition of limestone quarrying in the hills along the River Oise, south of the town of Creil. Stone working was the first industry in the Creil basin. Similar in composition to the stone used in the pyramids of Giza in Egypt, the stone was created when shellfish were deposited at the bottom of the sea, 45 million years ago, during the tertiary period.
